Mahama jailing Ghanaians over freedom of speech is unacceptable— Cwesi Oteng

Date:

Renowned gospel musician, Cwesi Oteng has expressed concern about how the Mahama-led administration has been arresting and jailing people for expressing their views.

According to him, the current government is not tolerant, whilst the country’s democracy has respect for freedom of speech and movement.

The “God Dey Bless Me” hitmaker expressed these concerns during an exclusive interview with Max Morning Show in Accra on Thursday.

“During the erstwhile administration, we witnessed Ghana, where freedom of speech and tolerance were upheld. We were in Ghana here, where there was freedom of speech to the extent that people took it for granted. They took it as far as insulting leaders and authorities, with no one being punished for the offense. Even former President Akufo-Addo was insulted and cursed; they said he should die, but he didn’t arrest anybody.”

“Today, we find ourselves in a country where journalists are being arrested, TikTokers are being searched with IP addresses, and we should be okay?” he lamented.

Cwesi Oteng maintained that as the previous government pardoned those who trespassed against the administration, he was expecting the Mahama-led government to also be tolerant of the citizenry.

“Personally I am unhappy that people are being arrested for free speech. It is not fair especially when we had a government who was very tolerant,” he bemoaned.
