WAFU B GIRLS CUP: Ghana defeats Nigeria 3-1 on penalties (VIDEO)

Date:

The Black Princesses of Ghana have emerged as the champions of the inaugural WAFU B U-20 Girls Cup after a 3-1 victory over the Super Falconets of Nigeria at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday night.

In an energy-sapping encounter, both teams showed grit throughout the tie. Captain of the Black Princesses, Stella Nyamekye gave her side the lead in the 38th minute from the penalty spot. She showed mental toughness as she was ordered by the referee to retake the penalty due to encroachment into the penalty box. Ghana went into the break with a precious 1-0 lead.

Faith Ladies’ Maafia Nyame nearly doubled Ghana’s lead in the 68th minute with a long-range shot as the Nigerians kept pushing for an equalizer.

The Super Falconets’ persistence for an equalizer paid off in added time as Flourish Sabastine pounced on a loose ball after Ghana’s goalkeeper who has been exceptional throughout the tournament let a low cross into the box passed through her hands to send the match into a penalty shootout.

Ghana won the penalty shootout 3-1 to clinch the maiden WAFU B U-20 Girls Cup after Afi Amenyeku saved four penalties before Ampem Darkoa’s Mary Amponsah scored the decisive kick.
