‘Super 8’ Tennis Tournament Set to Promote Abiriw

Date:

Abiriw Guantuahene’s Super 8 Tennis Tournament is set to come off at the Ghana Lawn Tennis Club, Adabraka, Accra, from Tuesday, 20th to Sunday, 25th of September, 2026.

The six-day intense tennis championship is set to bring together eight of the most outstanding Ghanaian tennis players for a competitive event aimed at promoting sporting talent, healthy living and community development.

The tournament is spearheaded by Nana Kwabena Owusu, Guantuahene of Abiriw, whose passion for sports and commitment to community development inspired the initiative while also reflecting the partnership between traditional authority and private enterprise revived through the support of Hope Avenue Foundation Africa.

According to the tournament’s organiser, the main concept of the Super 8 format is to create a focused and highly competitive platform for eight of the best local tennis players — Isaac, Steven, Ken, Octopus, Agyei, Akaak, Naasei and Ablorh — to showcase their abilities.

Nana Kwabena Owusu, Guantuahene of Abiriw, said of the much-anticipated event, “I see the tournament as more than a sporting competition. It is designed to connect the traditions and identity of Abiriw with Ghana’s wider sporting community while allowing local athletes to gain visibility. The initiative also seeks to promote physical fitness, sportsmanship and healthy competition, while inspiring young people to take an interest in tennis.

Having partners like Hope Avenue Foundation Africa, Janet O.A Enterprise and IREVA Sports Agency reflects the partnership between traditional leadership, private enterprise and sports-development interests. An ambition is to help create a pathway for the next generation of tennis players from Abiriw Akuapem,” he added.

The tournament is also expected to serve as a meeting point for the Abiriw community, its diaspora, and tennis enthusiasts in Accra.

The initiative will also serve as a demonstration of how traditional leadership, athletes and private-sector support can combine to develop a community-based sporting event with wider appeal.

Set to take place from 22–26 September 2026, with matches scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm each day at the Ghana Tennis Club in Adabraka, tennis enthusiasts and spectators will be treated to some smashing serves, energetic baseline running, and superb winners from the athletes.

With its combination of competitive tennis, community engagement and youth development, the Abiriw Guantuahene’s Super Tennis Tournament is positioned to give the sport a fresh platform while showcasing the potential of grassroots tennis in Ghana.
