Inter Miami CF have beaten Mexican side Cruz Azul 2-0 to lift the 2026 Campeones Cup.
Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi combined to break the deadlock on the 24th minute for the home side in a spectacular fashion.
Suarez hugged the byline and delivered an inviting cross into the box for Messi to head home the opening goal on the night.
That strike took Messi’s overall goals tally to a century (100) of goals in the Inter Miami shirt in (114) appearances. The first half ended with the home side leading by a goal up.
Back from recess, Inter Miami picked up where they left off in the first half. Lionel Messi was at his individual brilliance best as he had the game under control. He took the game by the scruff of the neck and dictated play. His linked-up play with his teammates was a thing of beauty on the night.
Everything he touched paid off to a premium effect. He delivered a beautiful assist from a corner kick on the 81st minute for Casemiro to head home the second goal for Inter Miami on the night.
Inter Miami wrapped up the win with a clean sheet in the process to kickstart new manager Cristian Killy Gonzalez’s era in charge with a trophy on his debut in the Miami dugout.
The Campeones Cup is Lionel Messi’s fifth title with Inter Miami and his 49th overall across his playing career.
