An audit by the Ghana Audit Service of the 13th African Games, also known as Accra 2023, uncovered financial irregularities of huge sums.
Shocking inflated contracts together with procurement violations, undelivered goods paid for, shoddy infrastructure construction, and questionable cash payments marred the entire competition posthumously.
Ghana’s Sports Minister under the President John Mahama-led administration expressed his utmost disgust at the way and manner the entire competition was run by the LOC led by Dr Kwaku Ofosu Asare.
Reacting to the criticism and allegations levelled against the LOC and certain individuals connected to the facade during the Nana Akuffo-Addo administration, Hon. Kofi Adams said the event was poorly run.
“The 13th African Games (Accra 2023) was run with so much carelessness. There’s no value for money. It is wrong,” the minister said on Max TV.
The minister remained firm on his stance, warning that anyone found culpable must pay.
On the infrastructure developed to facilitate the sporting activities—Borteyman Sports Complex and University of Ghana Stadium—Hon. Adams admitted that they are not value for money.
“I don’t deserve to be sports minister if I accept the cost of Borteyman and UG Stadium as value for money.”
The construction of the Borteyman Sports Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium reportedly cost the former government USD145 million and USD34 million, respectively.
