Spain dethrone Argentina to become World champions

Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging 10-man Argentina 1-0 in extra time in Sunday’s final at the New York/New Jersey Stadium.

Barcelona attacker Ferran Torres scored the only goal in the 106th minute, ending Argentina’s resistance and securing Spain’s second World Cup title in 2010.

Pedro Porro delivered a cross from the right, Nico Williams headed the ball into Torres’ path, and the Barcelona forward finished emphatically beyond Emiliano Martínez.

Martinez made 10 saves during the opening 90 minutes, setting a World Cup final record.

Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez was sent off at the end of regulation time for a silly challenge on Pau Curbasi.

Argentina have been notoriously known for their gross disrespect to their opponents at the tournament but this time they were handled well by the Spaniards.

The triumph completes an exceptional period for Spanish football following the country’s victory at Euro 2024.
