Former Italian footballer Toto Schillaci has died at the age of 59 after a long battle with colon cancer.
Toto enjoyed a 15-year playing career as he featured for Messina, Juventus, and Inter Milan.
He is fondly remembered for his goal-scoring run for Italy at the 1990 World Cup, including one against eventual winners, the late great Maradona’s Argentina, in the semi-final.
“His desire to emerge and reach the highest levels of football has been and will continue to be a source of inspiration for the many young people who chase the dream of playing in Serie A,” Serie A president Lorenzo Casini wrote in a statement following the news of his demise.
