Senegalese Footballer Youssef Diouf Dies After Match

Date:

Senegalese football has been plunged into a state of mourning following the passing of Youssef Diouf.

Diouf passed away on Sunday, February 22, after collapsing following a second division match between AS Saloum and Amitié FC at the Stade Maniang Soumare in Thies.

Diouf was making his debut appearance for AS Saloum. Starting the game on the bench, he came on with about ten minutes left to play.

He suddenly felt unwell; despite receiving immediate medical attention, he tragically died on the spot.

The Ligue sénégalaise de football professionnel released an official statement:

“The player took part in the match between Amitié FC and AS Saloum and played around twenty minutes during the 16th round of the championship. Substituted in the 72nd minute, he suffered a medical emergency after the final whistle while he was on the bench. He was not fasting at the time of the incident.”
