Stand-in captain of the Black Stars of Ghana Alexander Djiku has vowed to be fit in time to face The Gambia.

Djiku led the Black Stars of Ghana against the Elephants of Ivory Coast in the first game of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers on Thursday.

The centre-back stood in as Ghana’s defensive rock was substituted in the 70th minute after picking up a knock.

Ghana had gone down 2-0 thanks to goals from Malick Yalcouye and Franck Kessie before Djiku’s injury.

Speaking to 3sports after the game, the defender assures us that he will get himself ready in time to face the Gambia in Accra on September 29, 2026.

“In the first half, I felt pain in my side following a tackle. During halftime, the pain intensified significantly. I will see if I can recover, but I will do everything to be ready for the next game.”
