Karti Chidambram, a Congress MP in India, has strongly voiced his assertions against the country’s plan to bid for hosting rights to the 2036 Olympics.
The Prime Minister of India disclosed in October 2023 that the country would bid to host the 2036 Olympics.
He said, India is very excited to organize an Olympics.“ India will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to organize the 2036 Olympics. It’s a dream of 140 crore Indians.
With the support of the IOC, we would want to fulfill this dream. Sports are not just for winning medals; they are also the best way to win hearts. It not only gives rise to champions but also promotes peace.”
However, Chidambram has cautioned that it would be a “colossal disaster” for the country as it would be “forced to build stadia, which will be seldom used, and the financial burden” would drive them into a huge debt.
He was reacting to International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Nita Ambani’s statement at an event where she talked about the “shared dream to bring the Olympics to India.”.
