Since being elected to return as president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has welcomed a number of high-profile congratulatory visits.
On Thursday, December 12, 2024, the president-elect, Mr Mahama, was paid a courtesy call by Tong Defa, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana.
H.E. Defa conveyed a congratulatory message on behalf of the president of China, Xi Jinping, for winning the 2024 presidential elections.
Though highlighting Ghana’s credit rating being affected by the debt default to Sino-Hydro (financier of various projects in Ghana), Mr Mahama called for a closer working relationship with China.
“Ghana needs to work even closer with its partners, including China. Once we complete the transition, we’ll begin engaging with China on technical cooperation issues and how Ghana can continue to benefit from the FOCAC disbursement and the Belt and Road Initiative,” he stated in a social media post.
Mr Mahama hopes both countries can continue with the close partnership it has enjoyed since the time of the very first president of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
