Frank Lampard must be questioning his decision to become a coach after Chelsea suffered their fifth straight defeat since he returned as the club’s interim manager.
The former Chelsea midfielder began his career as a coach at Derby County in the English championship on 31st May 2018 on a three-year contract, guiding the club to the championship play-offs final and losing to Aston Villa. This looked promising with just his first-ever season as a football manager.
Chelsea moved quickly to secure his services the following season to start a three-year project, making him the first Englishman to lead the club in over twenty years. Despite having an inseparable relationship with him as his manager, Jose Mourinho heavily criticized Frank Lampard’s tactics in his first competitive match as he lost 4-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
In a season where the London club was handed a season-long transfer ban, he managed to guide them to a fourth-place finish.
Lampard was sacked the following after several poor performances on the pitch. He joined Everton Football Club after being unemployed for a year on 31st January 2022 following the sacking of Rafael Benitez who left the club in sixteenth place on the league table. The former Manchester City player helped the team escape relegation but couldn’t make the team better the next year, causing him to be sacked.
The two times UEFA Champions League winners made the most shocking decision to appoint him as an interim coach at a time when everyone felt the team needed a more experienced coach to change the fortunes of the team, after the dismissal of Graham Potter by owner, Todd Boehly.
Chelsea are now winless in eight games after losing at home to Brentford on Wednesday night for the second season in a row. It would be interesting to see how the club’s board will act following this run of poor results. Will the club keep Lampard or stick with him till the new coach takes over at the end of the season? Does Lampard need to resign to protect the little dignity he has left as a professional football manager?
