Renowned Historian and Legal practitioner, Yaw Frimpong Anokye says there is no genre of music called Gospel music in the world.
According to him, the genre was derived from the prominent Ghanaian Highlife music.
Mr Anokye made the revelation when he was educating Ghanaians about the origin of Highlife music on Max Morning Dew in Accra on Monday.
He said Highlife was a refined music which projected culture and was full of inspiration, thus through its inspirational and motivational nature came about gospel.
Mr Anokye noted that there were legendary highlife musicians who in the years back sang those inspirational songs which now are termed as gospel.
“There’s nothing like gospel music or circular or devilish music. It is the same highlife that today’s people have styled the inspirational side to only sing. It’s worth noting that there is no branch of music called the Gospel in the world. What they are singing is called an inspirational or motivational song,” he explained.
Mr Anokye observed that the dressing and the appearance of the so-called “gospel” musicians did not distinguish them from musicians doing circular songs.
