United Kingdom-based Ghanaian gospel musician Sonnie Badu has expressed the need for gospel musicians to tow the lines of secular artistes to make the gospel fraternity develop.
According to him, he is inspired by the versatility and success of Nigerian Afrobeats stars Burna Boy and Davido, as he always learns from them to replicate their impacts in the gospel industry.
In a recent media interview, the “Baba” hitmaker noted that the two stars had a unique musical style, which was demonstrated widely in the global impact of their Afrofusion sound.
“I am inspired by Davido and Burna Boy; I have seen the kind of music they do. I like to learn what they are doing so I can do it in the gospel space. I can’t say I don’t listen to secular music; that would be a lie. I do hear it, and I enjoy it. I do listen to secular music to see what I can do better,” he said.
Sonnie Badu then refuted claims by some Christians that listening to secular music weakened the divine spirit in a person.
He stated that he mostly listened to a few other genres aside from gospel music in order to learn and pick cues from it and apply them in his space.
Sonnie Badu also underscored the importance of drawing inspiration from various genres and artists, even outside the gospel music realm, to sharpen one’s endeavor.
