A violent clash between the military and individuals identified to be illegal miners in Obuasi, which resulted in the deaths of eight persons, is set to be investigated.

The first gentleman of the land, President John Dramani Mahama, appalled by the situation, ordered an investigation into the matter, as he expressed deep regret.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the illegal miners intended to force their way through the Deep Decline section, breaching the mine’s security fence at Côte d’Or Ramp at around 11 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

The miners ignored several warnings by the military, sparking the confrontation and the use of necessary force by officers on duty.

The Ghana Armed Forces, while advising illegal miners on respecting the law, assured members of the community of its commitment protecting lives and property.
