Voting is underway in 19 selected polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency, as the much-anticipated partial election rerun seeks to finally determine the area’s next Member of Parliament.
The race is between Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Why This Rerun Matters
The December 7 General Election in Ablekuma North ended in controversy, with damaged result forms (Pink Sheets) forcing the Electoral Commission (EC) to rely on scanned copies. This sparked disagreement, especially after 262 polling station results showed:
-
NPP – Afriyieh: 32,512
-
NDC – Aubynn: 32,464
-
Vote Margin: Just 48 votes
Today’s rerun—covering 19 polling stations and 6,863 expected voters—will determine the final winner.
EC’s Decision and Legal Pushback
The EC ruled that since the 19 scanned results could not be verified by original Presiding Officers, a rerun was required. Though party agents had signed off, verification could not be confirmed.
The NPP initially rejected the decision and sought a court injunction, claiming their candidate had already won by 414 votes. However, the court dismissed the case on July 9.
Despite the party’s official boycott, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh confirmed she is contesting, supported by several party leaders and grassroots supporters.
