The Black Starlets of Ghana caught the attention of Ghanaians following stellar performances at the 2024 UEFA U-16 Four Nations Tournament in Russia during April.
With the likes of captain Tsivarnyo and Narbi leading the frontlines, the team picked up impressive wins over Serbia and Kazakhstan, despite an opening match loss to hosts Russia.
The spectacular displays got fans anticipating seeing the progressive style of football at the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship.
Laryea’s boys kicked off the tournament with an emphatic 5-1 win over the now-tournament finalist, Ivory Coast, before beating Benin 2-0 while implementing the National Football Philosophy.
A heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Burkina Faso in the semifinals meant Ghana would not qualify for the U-17 AFCON for a third successful time.
Laryea Kingston, in the aftermath of his dramatic public resignation during the semifinals post-match presser, has apologized to Ghanaians, as he feels he disappointed them despite being overwhelmed by their support.
“I have been overwhelmed by the support, prayers, and well wishes this current Ghana U17 team has generated in the media and the public discourse.
I apologize unreservedly for our failure to pay back the trust, love, and support we have graciously received from Ghanaians. We worked very hard for several weeks for the chance to reach the final of the WAFU tournament to compete for the ultimate prize, but it was not to be,” Laryea Kingston stated in a press release.
