La Dadekotopon MP laments slow progress of La General Hospital redevelopment project

Date:

The Member of Parliament for the La Dadekotopon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Rita Odoley Sowah is unhappy that work has not begun on the redevelopment of the La General Hospital since it was pulled down over a year ago.

The hospital was closed down in March 2020 to pave way for its redevelopment due to the dilapidated nature of existing facilities which made it unsafe for both staff and patients.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the commencement of construction of the La General Hospital Redevelopment Project in August 2020.

The MP for the constituency called on the government to expedite action in commencing the project.

“They pulled it [the hospital] down assuring us that work was going to commence in August last year. And as we sit, nothing has been done about it.”

“I have filed that question as well [in Parliament] and I am told it will commence in June, and I am praying that government will stick to the promise and start work in June for the people of La,” she added.

The redevelopment was scheduled to be completed in 24 months.

It is being financed by a credit facility from Standard Chartered Bank of the United Kingdom, with an export credit guarantee from Sinosure of the People’s Republic of China, to the tune of €68 million with an insurance cover of €3,860,349.18.

The project will be undertaken by a Chinese company, Poly Changda.

Upon completion, it will be transformed into a 160-bed facility and will be fitted with an outpatient department; inpatient wards; maternity and neonatal services; surgical unit with four theatres; accident and emergency department; public health department; pharmacy unit; laboratory; administration; imaging area, with CT Scan, X-ray room, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, mammography units; physiotherapy unit; and a mortuary

The facility, which was formerly known as the La Polyclinic, was established in the early 1960s.

It mainly served residents of La, Osu, Teshie, Nungua and its surrounding areas with their healthcare needs.
