KNUST Student Jailed 10 Years for Robbery

Date:

A 25-year-old Level 200 student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Fatawu Amponsah, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Akropong Circuit Court for robbing a hairdresser at knifepoint.

The incident occurred on June 16, 2025, at around 2:30 a.m., when the victim, Juliet Nyarko, a hairdresser apprentice at Abuakwa-Asenemaso, was on her way home. Fatawu, who also worked as a driver’s mate and lived nearby at SDA Junction, trailed her and demanded her iPhone 11, valued at GH¢3,000.

When Juliet refused, Fatawu pulled out a kitchen knife, assaulted her severely, and pushed her to the ground before stealing the phone and fleeing. Her screams drew the attention of community members who chased and apprehended him. He was handed over to the Abuakwa Police.

During investigations, Fatawu confessed to the crime in his caution statement. He later pleaded guilty in court and was convicted on his own plea by presiding judge Mrs. Gloria Mensah Bonsu.

The case was prosecuted by Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu.
