Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the immediate evacuation of Ghanaians from Iran due to rising tensions between Israel and Iran.
In a Facebook post on Monday, June 16, 2025, Mr. Ablakwa stated that the Mahama administration made the decision to safeguard Ghanaian lives as the conflict intensifies.
“In the interest of protecting Ghanaian lives, the Mahama administration has ordered the immediate evacuation of citizens in Iran following the escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” he wrote.
As part of the emergency measures, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been shut down, and all diplomats, students, and other nationals are being evacuated through land borders.
The Minister added that the government is also closely monitoring the situation in Israel: “We have instructed the embassy in Tel Aviv to scale down operations to the barest minimum. All Ghanaians in Israel are advised to remain in close contact with our consular office.”
Reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to citizen safety, Mr. Ablakwa assured that “no effort will be spared to protect Ghanaian lives and keep all citizens out of harm’s way.”
He concluded with a renewed call for peace: “The Government of Ghana urges both parties to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomacy over hostilities.”
