The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reportedly passed away.
Sources close to the family and party confirm that Mr. Kumi died on Monday, July 7, 2025, although the cause of death has yet to be officially disclosed. Neither the NPP nor the Parliament of Ghana has issued a formal statement or released details about funeral arrangements at this time.
Mr. Kumi was serving his first term in Parliament, having won one of the most fiercely contested seats during the December 2024 general elections.
The Akwatia constituency, located in Ghana’s Eastern Region, was a key battleground in the last election cycle. Known for swinging between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the seat saw intense competition, political tension, and reports of alleged vote-buying and irregularities at polling stations.
Despite the challenges, Ernest Kumi secured a narrow victory for the NPP, marking a significant political win for the party in the region.
