Viktor Gyokeres capped his superb performance on Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League matchday three with a brace.
The Sweden international, signed for a record fee from Sporting Lisbon, played like a man on a mission.
Having been held off by Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid for large parts of the game and surviving a ferocious Julian Alvarez scare, the Gunners opened the floodgatethrough defender Gabriel Magalhães in the 57th minute.
Gabriel Martinelli increased the North London club’s tally before the Gyokeres show began. Gyokeres scored twice in three minutes as Arsenal ran off 4-0 winners.
Gyokeres has now scored five times in 12 matches, an exciting prospect of things to come, as Mikel Arteta expressed joy and relief after the game.
“He deserved it because of everything that we were seeing in terms of what he was bringing to the team and how much he was helping the team in many areas, apart from scoring goals in the last few weeks; there was no debate about that,” said Arteta.
“It was about keeping that belief in himself, that emotional state that he can enjoy and play freely.
“I think he has certainly done that today; [he had] a big smile on his face.
“Look at his teammates as well; in the picture and the video, they are all so happy for him because he fully deserves it.”
