The Black Princesses will kick off their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign against Austria on today (Monday), September 2, 2024.
Since arriving in Colombia on August 14, the team has been preparing for the tournament, which began on August 31, 2024. As part of their preparation, Ghana played two high-profile international friendlies, drawing 0-0 with Mexico and 2-2 with South Korea.
Coach Yussif Basigi has a fully fit squad for the tournament and is optimistic about their performance. Key players such as Captain Stella Nyamekye, Afi Amenyeku, Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah, and Comfort Yeboah, who were instrumental in winning the African Games in March, are ready to make an impact.
Despite qualifying for the U-20 Women’s World Cup for the seventh consecutive time, Ghana has yet to advance beyond the group stage. Coach Basigi believes the Black Princesses are prepared to improve on their past performances.
Ghana has won only one of their last nine World Cup matches and aims to enhance that record in Colombia. Their opening Group E match against Austria will be held at the El Techo stadium in Bogotá at 22:00 GMT.
