Jamaican dancehall artiste Grace Latoya Hamilton, known by her stage name Spice, says she learned of Ghana’s industry through dancehall music.
According to Spice, her discovery of Ghana was inspired by the music of Stonebwoy.
Speaking in a media interview during her visit to Ghana on Friday, Spice stated that she heard a track by Stonebwoy and wanted to know the Jamaican artiste who sang the song, but to her dismay, it was rather a Ghanaian artiste.
“I was surprised to know Stonebwoy is from Ghana when I first heard his song in Jamaica. I thought it was a Jamaican delivering that sound, but I was told he’s from Ghana. That’s how I discovered the entire country,” she said.
Since then, Spice began following some of the Ghanaian musicians who sang dancehall music.
“I really love dancehall, and I began following Stonebwoy to know his dancehall songs. We met at an airport and planned a collaboration,” she said.
Spice, known for her contributions to global dancehall music, expressed her admiration for Ghanaian artistes and their role in putting the country on the map through the dancehall genre.
She noted that her interest in Ghana deepened as she began to follow Stonebwoy and explored other artistes from the region.
The Jamaican star is currently in Ghana to shoot the music video for “Jille & Whine,” a viral track from Stonebwoy’s Up and Running album.
This collaboration underscored the growing global influence of Ghanaian music, particularly in the dancehall and Afrobeat genres.
Meanwhile, Spice’s visit had sparked excitement among fans and further highlighted the cultural exchange between Ghana and Jamaica through music.
