The Ghana Police Service has announced the mother and 12-year-old girl who married a Ga traditional leader over the weekend have been taken into protective custody after a post by Ablade TV, shared by Max TV, went viral on social media.
On April 1, 2024, the police publicly posted on social media regarding their involvement in the shocking marriage between 63-year-old Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII and the underage Naa Okromo.
“The Ghana Police Service is working with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and Department of Social Welfare to provide her with the necessary support while the matter is under investigation,” the police statement read.
The traditional marriage, which was glaringly against the laws of Ghana stating no person below the age of 18 can get married, took place at Nungua, which had tongues wagging on social media as the arrest of the Nuumo Borketey.
The Ga traditional authority astonishingly claimed the marriage was to ward off other men since the Naa Okromo was a stool wife.
