#BeijingMarathon: 3 African runners punished after Chinese athlete wins marathon

Date:

An examination into the contentious outcome of the Beijing half marathon resulted in the medals of the top three finishers being taken away.

The three African competitors were accused of planning to give China’s top runner, He Jie, the advantage on Sunday.

Kenya’s Robert Keter and Willy Mnangat and Ethiopia’s Djene Hailu appeared to have slowed down to allow the Chinese runner to by move past them to first place.

The organizing committee of the race in Beijing revealed that none of the athletes registered as pacemakers for He after Mnangat insisted to the BBC that they ran as pacemakers.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported that the parties in question have all been punished while their results are null.
