The National Sports Authority (NSA) continues to be in the trends for the week, particularly for two main reasons.

One main reason is the deteriorating state of the country’s sporting infrastructure, which has led to the second reason, the dissolution of its board by the presidency.

Earlier this week, Max Online reported about four national stadia closed down for major renovation, which was vehemently denied by the current NSA boss, Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

He explained to a sister Accra-based radio station that the Baba Yara Stadium will be readily available for the start of the new 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.

However, on Wednesday, September 2, a respected journalist in the digital media space disclosed that Asante Kotoko are looking to move away from their traditional home to the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

Meanwhile, Accra Hearts of Oak announced a day before that the University of Ghana Stadium will be their temporary home for matchdays one and three of the new season.

The Accra Sports Stadium pitch, according to the NSA boss, is off limit for use as it is being readied for Ghana’s 2027 AFCON qualifier against The Gambia on September 27, 2026.

Now onto President Mahama’s decision to dissolve the board—the competency of the board was quickly called into question following the announcement.

Commentaries regarding the dissolution, according to some football experts, including Seth Panwum, a former board chair under the previous government, speculating the president’s disdain for the performance of the board.

Prof. Fred Awaah, during an inspection tour of the Accra Sports Stadium as the Ghanaians look to prepare for the 2027 U20 AFCON hosting duties, said the facility is a “death trap” and may have to be “pulled down”.

Mr Panwum further questioned why the “benchwarmers” were removed but the players were left on the pitch to still play. He believes the move by the President was purely a “political gimmick”.

The NSA Director-General position clearly is one of the most high-pressured jobs in the country, considering how Mr Ampofo’s predecessors had come under a lot of criticism.

Holding such a position could only be understood by Mr Ampofo, who also revealed his outfit is understaffed and that he, together with his two deputies, has not been paid for the last 18 months.
