Asamoah Gyan Narrates How He Moved to Ligue 1

Date:

Black Stars legend Asamoah Gyan has revealed how his move to Ligue 1 club Stade Rennes materialised.

Ghana’s World Cup hero played for some of the biggest teams in Europe, including Udinese, Stade Rennes, and Sunderland.

Gyan moved to Udinese just before the 2004 Athens Olympics but spent time in Serie B starring for Modena FC as a youngster.

At Ghana’s maiden appearance at the men’s senior FIFA World Cup in 2006, Gyan impressed massively, scoring a goal in the tournament.

Prior to the tournament, Gyan had to leave Ghana’s camp during the 2006 AFCON due to an injury he sustained. An injury whose seriousness, according to the retired player, fans had doubted.

French side Stade Rennes accelerated their interest in the Ghanaian star so much that he signed his contract while on a hospital bed, recuperating from a surgery.

“I came with that injury to play for Ghana. I sacrificed for the national team. I took that injury back to Udinese. I was operated on… and Rennes were insisting on signing me despite the injury, which showed the confidence they had in me. So I signed the contract on a hospital bed,” said Gyan on GH Police TV.
