PHOTOSTORY: Ghana’s Black Queens Receive Hero’s Welcome

Date:

Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, received a warm welcome at Kotoka International Airport on Monday, July 28, after clinching bronze at the 2024 African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Queens secured third place with a tense 4-3 penalty shootout win over South Africa after a goalless draw in regulation time—Ghana’s first WAFCON medal since 2016.

Supporters, many dressed in national colours, thronged the airport as early as 4:00 am, singing, dancing, and waving flags to celebrate the team’s achievement.

This podium finish marks a key moment in the team’s resurgence under new technical leadership, ending an eight-year continental medal drought and boosting hopes for the future of women’s football in Ghana.

The team was welcomed by officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and former national stars. They are expected to present their medal to national leaders in the coming days.
