Mr. Ackah Anthony, former President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), has passed away after a brief illness.
He died in the early hours of Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Police Hospital in Accra.
Mr. Anthony served as SWAG’s sixth president from 2007 to 2015, during which he led several transformative initiatives for the association.
His tenure was marked by strong advocacy on key industry issues and the successful organization of multiple editions of the annual SWAG Awards — Ghana’s longest-running sports awards scheme.
A veteran journalist, he was also the former Assistant Editor of Graphic Sports at the Graphic Communications Group Limited. He was widely known for his bold and insightful column, Candid Corner, which appeared on the back page of The Mirror. The column was highly regarded for its fearless commentary on major developments in Ghana’s sports landscape.
One of his notable legacies was leading the redesign and renovation of the SWAG Club House in Dansoman. He also spearheaded a nationwide membership drive that significantly expanded the association’s reach.
Mr. Anthony is survived by his wife, Evelyn — a former Director at the Ministry of Information — and four children.
