GOC marks Olympic Day June 21

Date:

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), in collaboration with various sports federations and the Ghana Education Service, will celebrate Olympic Day on Saturday, June 21, with a range of activities aimed at promoting Olympic values and encouraging sports participation across all age groups.

The celebration, which will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium, is expected to bring together more than 1,000 students from 20 selected schools.

Activities lined up for the day include fitness sessions, mini sports competitions, educational programs, and live demonstrations from 21 different sporting disciplines. These events aim to inspire young Ghanaians to explore new sports and embrace an active lifestyle.

To add an intellectual dimension to the day, select schools will participate in a quiz competition focused on Olympism—testing their knowledge of the Olympic Movement, its history, and core values such as excellence, friendship, and respect.

Although Olympic Day is globally observed on June 23, Ghana’s celebration will be held two days earlier. GOC President, Mr. Richard Akpokavie, explained that the early celebration allows for greater participation and aligns with local programming schedules.

“This is a moment to reflect on the values that define the Olympic spirit. We hope to inspire young people to embody excellence, friendship, and respect—both in and out of sport,” Mr. Akpokavie stated.

Chairman of the planning committee, Mr. Fedrick Lartey-Otoo, added that this year’s event marks a return after a long break and promises an exciting and memorable experience for all involved.

Olympic Day is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and to promote the principles of Olympism through sport, education, and cultural engagement.
