GFA to rollout VAR in GPL next season

Date:

The Referee Manager at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Kotey, has disclosed that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is set to start next season.

In November 2024, FIFA representatives Inokuchi Takaaki and Michael Bailey engaged the GFA on the Implementation Assistance and Approval Programme (IAAP) for a successful rollout on the VAR.

The GFA president, Kurt Okraku, expressed his determination in ensuring the VAR is swiftly adopted in the GPL.

The VAR Team Lead, Alex Kotey, will lead the training of the technology, with FIFA-licensed referee Daniel Laryea as one of the facilitators for referees only.

“We want to start next season somewhere August or September. We have two or three months to train. That is the plan from FIFA. We can do it in less than three months if our people can catch it fast,” he revealed on Max FM’s Sports Pack show.

The broadcaster of the league would also receive training from an expert team from FIFA ahead of the commencement of the 2025-26 season.

The GFA is planning to pilot the implementation of the technology on the 2024-25 MTN FA Cup final or the Women’s FA Cup final.
