Kojo Addae Mensah slams Black Stars, tips Kotoko for GPL title

Date:

The Chief Executive Officer of Databank Group and avid football fan, Kojo Addae Mensah, has slammed the performance of the Black Stars in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Ghana has been globally recognized as a powerhouse of African football since gaining independence from the British in 1957.

A four-time African champion, qualified for the FIFA Men’s World Cup four times since the turn of the millennium, one-time World Cup quarter-finalists, yet struggled to qualify for the next continental event.

On Thursday, January 16, Henry Asante-Twum, the Communication Director for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), disclosed on Max FM that there would be changes to the technical team of the Black Stars except for head coach Otto Addo.

Addae Mensah, who was involved in the search committee set up by the GFA to look for the next Black Stars coach, and eventually settling for Otto Addo, welcomed this action by the GFA, considering the team’s woeful outing in the AFCON qualifiers.

“The Black Stars AFCON qualifying campaign results are not acceptable. As a minimum, Ghana should qualify for the Nations Cup. And we played the qualifiers, even struggling to win a game. So definitely something has to give. We cannot just accept this,” he said to Nana Darkwa Gyasi on the Sport Pack show.

John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann are the names ringing around in the media spaces as the sacrificial lambs to improve the Black Stars.

Once a management member of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Addae Mensah still holds allegiance to the club and favors them for the 2024-25 Ghana Premier League title despite the margin at the top six places of the table being very slim.

“We [Kotoko] are hopeful of winning the league this season, but this league is very difficult and tight. The difference between the teams is big so any team can win it,” he said about his beloved club.
