2025 AFCON Q: NSA closes down Baba Yara Stadium for maintenance

Date:

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced the closure of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium following backlash from fans after Ghana’s 0-1 loss to Angola.

Angola shocked the Black Stars at home with a second-half stoppage time strike from Milson.

Fans and football stakeholders expressed extreme dissatisfaction at the state of the pitch, which was approved by CAF and Black Stars assistant manager, John Paintsil.

This has led to the swift reaction from the NSA, a day after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Kumasi.

The competency of the NSA has been questioned by sections of Ghanaians in recent times, with many also unhappy the new TnA Stadium in Tarkwa being handed over to its authority.

Majeed Bawa, the NSA’s Deputy Director General, defended the stadium’s condition, questioning the critics. “Are they implying the Angolans were playing in the sky? Both teams played on the same pitch, which was inspected and approved by CAF.”

The stadium closure has come at the most unopportune time for Ghana Premier League side Asante Kotoko, who play hosts to away teams there.

Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum’s side may have to move their home matches to the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Abrankese, Kumasi.
