GPL MATCH DAY 23: Clubs to observe minute silence in honour of May 9 Stadium disaster victims

Date:

This week’s Match day 23 games in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) will see clubs observe a minute silence in honour of the May 9 stadium disaster victims.

This directive came from the Ghana Football Association and will be adhered to at the various stadiums.

The GFA also asked clubs in the Premier League, Division One and the Women’s League to wear black armbands in honour of the 126 persons that perished on the day.

As part of activities marking 20 years anniversary of the tragic disaster, a commemorative event would be held at the forecourt of the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, May 9.

The event themed, “Never Again- Say No to Hooliganism”, will be attended by the Minister of Youth & Sports Hon. Mustapha Ussif, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority Prof. Peter Twumasi, GFA President Kurt ES Okraku and top officials from the Ghana Football Association.

The commemorative event will commence at 8am on Sunday.

The Accra Sports Stadium disaster occurred on May 9, 2001, when Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko faced off in a league game.

It took the lives of 126 people, making it the worst stadium disaster to have ever taken place in Africa.
