Romelu Lukaku and Sardar Azmoun both hit the post for the home team before Stephan El Shaarawy scored the game-winning goal at Stadio Olympico in the 90th minute.
Danilo D’Ambrosio’s first-half dismissal left Monza with only 10 players, forcing them to play for more than 50 minutes.
After making “crying” gestures toward the opposing bench, Mourinho was subsequently issued a red card in the final seconds of regulation time.
Roma’s victory ended Monza’s five-match winning streak and brought them within three points of Napoli, the league’s top team.
