The Central African Republic (CAR) suffered a 1-2 loss at home to Angola in the Total Energies AFCON 23 qualifying match. The CAR team, led by their star captain Geoffrey Kondogbia, had high hopes of securing a victory to improve their chances of qualifying for their first-ever African Nations Cup (AFCON).
Angola’s Felicio Mendes ‘Milson’ Joao scored the winning goal just four minutes before the end of the match, giving Angola hope of qualifying for the AFCON.
Kialonga Gaspar had earlier given the Palancas Negras the lead in the 12th minute, but CAR’s Kondogbia swiftly equalized for his team in the following minute after halftime.
With this loss, the CAR’s chances of qualifying for the AFCON have become more challenging. Currently in Group E, a win for first-placed Ghana over Madagascar would significantly boost Ghana’s qualification prospects for the tournament in Ivory Coast.
For the CAR to have a chance at qualification, they will need to secure a victory against Ghana in the final round of matches, scheduled to be played in September. Additionally, they will also need Angola to lose in their final match. It will be a tough task, but not impossible, for the CAR to secure their qualification for the prestigious AFCON tournament.
