Richard Akpokavie has been elected as the new president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) following the 2025 GOC elections.
Akpokavie secured a convincing win, polling 44 votes against Michael Aggrey’s 19. His victory on Saturday marks a significant comeback, as he previously lost the presidential race in 2021 by just seven votes to then-incumbent Ben Nunoo Mensah.
Before his latest triumph, Akpokavie served as General Secretary of the GOC from 2017 to 2021, during which he built a strong reputation within Ghana’s sporting circles. As an athlete, he also captained Ghana’s national hockey team, showcasing his longstanding commitment to sports development.
The 2025 GOC elections reflect a new era for the Committee, with Akpokavie promising to lead with transparency and a renewed focus on athlete development.
