The president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has recounted how the Asantehene charged him to become the vice president of Ghana in 2009.
Ahead of the 2008 presidential elections, then- flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. John Evans Atta Mills of blessed memory, offered H.E. Mahama to run the contest as his vice presidential candidate.
According to H.E. Mahama, he turned down the offer presented to him by former Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) board chairman Ato Ahwoi and former Information Minister Kofi Totobi Quakyi.
H.E. Mahama, though planning to quit politics, accepted the role after he was summoned by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and charged to answer to the call of his nation.
He expressed his appreciation to His Majesty the Asantehene not only for influencing his decision to become the vice president alongside the late Prof. Mills, but also for his treasured friendship over the years.
