WEDNESDAY CL WRAP: Lewandowski stars for Barca, Arsenal unbeaten run ends

Date:

Robert Lewandowski continued his red-hot scoring form with two goals as Barcelona earned a third consecutive Champions League win by thrashing Red Star Belgrade.

Paris St-Germain’s winless run in the Champions League extended to three games as they were beaten at home by Atletico Madrid.

Angel Correa struck in the third minute of added time at the end of a hard-fought clash to snatch victory for the Spaniards.

A bizarre penalty incident cost Aston Villa as they suffered their first Champions League defeat of the season at Club Brugge in Belgium.

Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez nudged the ball out of the six-yard area and defender Tyrone Mings, thinking the goal-kick had not been taken, picked up the ball.

German referee Tobias Stieler awarded a penalty for handball, much to Villa boss Unai Emery’s anger with Brugge captain Hans Vanaken converting the spot kick.

Arsenal’s unbeaten run in this season’s Champions League was brought to an end by a controversial first-half penalty, which was converted by Hakan Calhanoglu as Inter Milan won at the San Siro.

Bayern Munich ended a two-match losing run in the Champions League with a narrow win over Benfica.

Jamal Musiala struck the game’s only goal, giving the Bundesliga giants a 67th-minute lead by nodding in Harry Kane’s header across the six-yard box.

Shakhtar Donetsk came from behind to earn their first victory in this season’s Champions League – and leave Young Boys still without a point.

Kastriot Imeri gave the Swiss champions a surprise 27th-minute lead, punishing the hosts after Cheikh Niasse intercepted a pass, to end Young Boys’ run of 363 minutes without a goal in the competition.

But Shakhtar trailed for only four minutes before Oleksandr Zubkov slotted in from Georgi Sudakov’s pass across the face of the goal.

The lively Sudakov then completed the turnaround four minutes before half-time with an excellent strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Atalanta continued their fine start to the season with a deserved Champions League victory at Stuttgart.

Atalanta, fresh from a dominant 3-0 win over Napoli on Sunday, started the second half on the front foot and took the lead through Ademola Lookman before substitute Nicolo Zaniolo secured the win in the second half.

French side Brest continued their superb run in the Champions League with a clinical win at Sparta Prague to move up to second in the League Phase table.

Karim Konate scored twice and missed a penalty as RB Salzburg beat Feyenoord to get their first points in this season’s Champions League.
