Joe Nana Adarkwa’s Black Maidens of Ghana produced a stunning comeback win over Benin in their second match of the 2024 WAFU BU-17 Girls Cup to set up a semifinal date with Ivory Coast or Nigeria.
Yenidou Gandonou gave Benin the lead against the run of play, eager to avoid another thrashing to the Black Maidens of Ghana, as they did in the tournament’s opener.
Ghana gained the lead for the first time in the game just before halftime through Priscilla Mensah, after Getrude Amoafo restored parity at the Ghanaman Soccer of Excellence.
Player of the match Gandonou got her side back on level terms ten minutes to the end of regular time, but Getrude Amoafo was not having any of that by completing her brace and Ghana’s winning goal of the game.
Ghana’s potential opponent in the semifinals, Ivory Coast, smashed five goals past Niger to sail through before meeting Nigeria for the top spot place in Group B on Monday, December 16, 2024.
