Ghana reaches a milestone in global musical domination as UNESCO adds the genre to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Highlife music, a popular West African music genre, originated in Ghana in the latter part of the 19th century with the fusion of Akan, Kpanlogo, and contemporary vibes.
The immense sacrifices of legends such as pioneer E.T. Mensah, C.K. Mann, Ramblers Dance Band, Ashanti Brothers, Obuoba J.A. Adofo, Daddy Lumba et al. see Ghanaian music reach this global recognition.
UNESCO announced the inscription on Wednesday, November 10, describing the genre as a “monumental expression of Ghana’s musical genius, culture, and global influence.”
