Retired Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan accused the New Patriotic Party of using his fame to canvass for votes.
Admired globally by millions, Gyan stunned majority of Ghanaians when he appeared to be siding the outing going ruling party, the NPP, during their campaign ahead of the 2024 General Elections.
The leading goal scorer for the Black Stars, Gyan, was named as part of the presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s sports manifesto team, in February 2024.
However, weeks later, he announced denouncing his membership from the party to focus on “humanitarian work” after a viral video of an altercation between himself and an official of the NPP.
“They used my popularity to get votes from the people,” he said about the NPP by a livestream on Instagram.
The NPP lost the presidential to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a huge margin in December 2024.
