Rooney Calls for Tougher Sanctions Against Racism in Football

Date:

Ex-Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has called for tougher sanctions like fines and points deductions in the fight against racism in football.

Rooney stated this while speaking on his new BBC podcast.

There were two major incidents last week, with Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo reporting racial abuse by a supporter during their 4-2 defeat at Liverpool.

Tottenham forward Mathys Tel was also the target of abuse on social media after missing a penalty in their Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Rooney said, “You have to hit the clubs by taking off points or hit them in the pocket and take money away from them. Otherwise, it will keep on going.

“Hopefully the right people sit down with the right organisations to try and get something serious in place.”
