Power Upgrades, Not Dumsor— President Mahama Reacts to Power Outages

Date:

Story by Samuella Mantebea Okanta

H.E. John Dramani Mahama announced to Ghanaians that the current power outages in some parts of the country are a result of ongoing system upgrades and not a relapse into the electricity crisis popularly known as “dumsor”.

He revealed that the government has procured about 2,500 transformers aimed at replacing ageing and overloaded equipment across the country. “I’ll appeal to our people.

The outages you are facing are not ‘dumsor’. It is to enable you to get better quality and stable power,” he said.

The president urged both ECG and NEDCo to improve their responsiveness to customer complaints, stressing the need for better communication with consumers.

NEDCo and ECG, we must now improve our customer response time. And so we need a system where when customers call, there’s a quick response to either rectify faults”, he added.

He further pointed out that many of the country’s existing transformers have become inadequate due to rapid population growth and can no longer meet current demand.

He therefore emphasised that this ongoing upgrade will stabilise power supply once completed.
