Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has called on Ghanaians to rally behind the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government following their resounding victory in the 2024 general election.
The NDC, led by John Dramani Mahama, secured a landslide win over the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), marking Mahama’s return to the presidency after eight years in opposition.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Gyan emphasized the need for unity and a collective effort to support the new administration. He also advised Ghanaians to adopt positive attitudes to ensure national progress.
“You know, when there is an issue, I will share my thoughts,” Gyan began. “Let’s support the government. Any government that comes to power, let’s support them. When you buy things at GHC 50 and sell them at GHC 1000, the country will go through hardship.”
He urged citizens to set aside partisan politics and focus on national development. “Ghana has decided. Let’s put party politics aside. If your party has won, focus on government. For us as citizens, we will also support.”
He concluded with a call for change: “We also have to change our attitudes and support the new government. Let’s congratulate the new government. That is my message.”
Gyan’s comments come amid his decision to withdraw from political activities ahead of the election. He stepped back from his involvement with Vice President Bawumia’s manifesto team, citing the importance of staying neutral and focusing on his philanthropic work.
Widely regarded as a national icon, Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances. His influence extends beyond football, making his call for unity a powerful message during this critical period in Ghana’s political history.
