Veteran musical griot Atongo Zimba has explained that his hit evergreen track “No Beer in Heaven” was written to preach against drunkenness.
As opposed to the long-held belief that the song was promoting drunkenness, the singer said it was rather composed to educate against drinking excessively.
Speaking exclusively to Max Drive in Accra on Monday, Atongo Zimba said the song was rather encouraging the minimum drink of beer.
“This is because if you drink all the beer and get intoxicated for you to be involved in an accident, your friends will grace your funeral to drink your beer on your behalf,” he said.
Atongo Zimba noted that those were captured in the lyrics for humans to drink responsibly and to also raise awareness on drinking.
He said there was the need for every human to drink or enjoy but should do it with moderation, because once “you die, you won’t be able to drink beer in heaven.”
Talking about the inspiration of the song, Atongo Zimba said he one day got drunk in the early 90s and almost got knocked down by a car.
“Once I reached home unhurt, I thanked God, and the song dropped in my mind about the need to drink responsibly so that the next day I can go and drink again. If you drink too much and something bad happens, you can’t live to drink again,” he added.
