Flashback: Chelsea brush aside Arsenal to boost North London derby statistics*

iMax Media Head of Sports Yaw Ampofo Ankrah was among the crowd who witnessed the encounter at the Emirates.

It was not the full house of 58,729 fans that Arsenal had previously recorded against Chelsea at home, but it was still the biggest crowd at the Emirates since Covid-19 restrictions for sports were eased by the UK government in late July 2021.

The match itself was not a typically fierce derby as the headlines plus the three points belonged to Romelu Lukaku and the visitors.

In recent seasons, Arsenal have generally had the upper hand overall against Chelsea.

The Gunners have won more games against the blues in the history of their colorful city rivalry.

Chelsea fans may boast of a new era of dominance but the records show that Arsenal are statistically superior having won 79 times to Chelsea’s 66, with 59 draws (as of the 22nd of August 2021).

So for lovers of statistics, Arsenal’s record win was a 5–1 victory in a First Division match at Stamford Bridge on the 29th of November 1930.

On the other hand, Chelsea’s record win was a 6–0 thrashing of their neighbors at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on 22 March 2014. Didier Drogba holds the mark for the most derby goals with 13 in all competitions.

The clubs have contested five major finals: the 2002 FA Cup Final, which Arsenal won 2–0, the 2007 League Cup Final, which Chelsea won 2–1, the 2017 FA Cup Final, which Arsenal won 2–1, the 2019 Europa League Final, which Chelsea won 4–1, and the 2020 FA Cup Final, which Arsenal won 2–1.

Life long Arsenal supporter and season ticket holder Paul Nixon was emphatic after the game that Arsenal will bounce back and continue their domestic dominance of Chelsea sooner rather than later.

“They can make all the noise now, but clearly, if we are to put emotions aside and stick only to the statistics, then Arsenal still hold the advantage when it comes to North London derbies”

61 year old Mr Nixon is also of the view that Mikel Arteta should not be sacked but given time to build a winsome team.
