Inaki and Nico Williams win first major trophy with Athletic Club

Date:

Athletic Club defeated Mallorca 4-2 on penalty shooting to end a forty-year trophy drought and win their 24th Copa del Rey.

Athletic Club’s 23-year-old back-up goalkeeper, Julian Aguirrebalaga, saved the kicks of Manu Morales and Nemanja Radonjic to leave the goalscorer in regular time, Sancet, to clinch the title for the Basque club.

Dani Rodriguez fired Mallorca ahead in the 21st minute after Athletic failed to clear from a corner.

Athletic were denied an equalizer before halftime when Nico Williams’ finish was ruled out for offside.

Oihan Sancet equalized just after recess, curling in after Nico Williams regained possession and played him through to force the game into extra time.

This is the first major trophy won together by Black Stars forward Inaki Williams and his brother, Nico.
