GPL Wk 31: Hearts of Oak held to a 1-1 draw by Karela United

Date:

Hearts of Oak were unable to maintain their previous home form after they failed to defeat Karela United in the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, May 30, 2022.

With a 1-1 draw, the Phobians edged rivals Asante Kotoko SC closer to the Ghana Premier League (GPL) crown.

For Kotoko to be proclaimed winners of the 2021-22 season, they only need one point from the final three matches.

Hearts coach Samuel Boadu made three changes to the lineup that defeated Bibiani Goldstars FC at the Accra Sports Stadium in the previous match, maintaining former Ghana players Sulley Ali Muntari and Samuel Inkoom.

Suraj Seidu took the place of Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, who is now with the Ghana national squad for the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.

Gladson Awako and Caleb Amankwah, who had replaced William Ntori Dankyi and Ibrahim Larry Sumaila, respectively, returned to the starting lineup.

Bismark Kobi-Mensah, Karela’s head coach, made three changes to the lineup that drew 1-1 with King Faisal Babes in the last round encounter in Nzema-Aiyinase.

Richard Berko has returned to the starting lineup after recuperating from an injury. He took Emmanuel Dagadu’s place.

To play the Phobians, Dafie Humin Mohammed and George Amonoo replaced Emmanuel Owusu Boakye and Umar Bashiru in the starting lineup.

Benjamin York scored the game’s opening goal with a fantastic strike on the stroke of halftime to put the Phobians ahead.

A lob pass from Muntari was mishandled by Karela defenders, and York pounced on a rebound with a quick spin to score the game’s first goal.

Seven minutes from time, Augustine Randolph’s cross was connected by replacement Emmanuel Owusu Boakye, who equalized for the visitors.
